Slaying Giants: David Slays Goliath

David Slays Goliath.

What is your current situation? Do you have something in your life that you want to change or need to change? Maybe, like me, you have a whole list! I'll bet the following items are on a lot of people's lists.
  • Make More Money
  • Pay Off Debt
  • Get in Shape
  • Lose 20 pounds
  • Get a New Car
  • Build a New House
  • Give more to your Church
  • Give more to an Important Charity
  • Help a Friend Get Out of Debt
  • Make Your Marriage Better
  • Find Your Perfect Mate
When we have financial problems we think our world is coming to an end, our pain is real, and we think our frustration is more than anyone else has ever experienced. The same is true if we're over weight or lonely. Then we see a young man with his legs blasted off returning from the war in Iraq, or a child dying from cancer, or a young mother killed by a drunken driver, and we start to realize that our problems are insignificant and selfish. Yet financial, weight, or relationship problems are problems and they are real, but they need to be put into perspective. Yet to us, they still feel like giants. So how do we deal with them and solve them? To each of us, our problems are giants. How do we slay giants? Probably one of the most famous giant killers in history was David (as in David and Goliath from the Bible). What made David able to kill Goliath? David was not a warrior, he was a shepherd. He was bringing food to his brothers who were fighting, when he learned about the giant Philistine named Goliath that no one had the courage to fight. He learned that the King had promised great riches to the man who would kill Goliath. I'm sure that everyone thought David was nuts to think he, a little shepherd, a teenager, could actually defeat Goliath. His brothers were angry with him for thinking he could do it, but he reminded them of how God had given him the ability to defeat a bear, and a lion, and he felt God would not let him down now. Here's what Terry Dean has to say about it in his book that I HIGHLY RECOMMEND, "Financial Freedom - A Step-By-Step Practical Guide for Walking in God's Blessings":
Did David walk out on the battlefield and tell God to kill Goliath? Did he stand there and pray for God to deal with the giant standing in front of him? No. ... He simply announced his victory when he got to the battlefield. He said what he was going to do. He said the Lord was going to give him the ability to kill Goliath and take his head. And then he said he was going to kill all the host of the Philistines. He got up there and said just like a teenager, "I'm going to kill you Goliath and then I'm going to kill your whole army too." There definitely wasn't any fear in David. People would say he had self-confidence, but that wouldn't be accurate. We need to come up with a new term to describe believers like David, "God-confidence." Sometimes we need to quit our praying and step out in faith in what God has already told us to do.
I highly recommend Terry's book - you can find a link to order it in the left-hand column of this blog, or click here. David did two key things that resulted in his victory over Goliath: he had faith (confidence) and he took action. Too many of us sit around and wait on an engraved, gold-sealed invitation to do something. We pray for solutions to our problems, yet we never take any action. We look for a sign, or for God to step in and do it for us. God didn't kill Goliath, David did. David knew God would help him, but David didn't wait, he saw the opportunity and took it. David was also prepared in that he was pretty good with that slingshot. God does not work like the Ronco Magic Slicer Dicer that comes with six steak knives. Don't expect God to make you a singing star if you've never tried to sing. Don't expect God to give you the ability to swim the English Channel if you've never learned how to swim. Don't expect God to make you wealthy if you've never lifted a finger to do anything to bring money into your life. You do your part, and God can and will work miracles with you. Together with God we can do anything. Here's a very prophetic sentence from Terry's book where he's talking about God, Moses, and the Israelites escaping from Egypt:
God did not part the Red Sea until they started moving toward it.
Read that a few more times and memorize it. Are you one of those people who desires something intensely yet when an opportunity presents itself you let fear stop you dead in your tracks? If so, the next time you have an opportunity to shine, remember David. If David can kill a fully armed giant, who was holding a sword and a shield, with only his slingshot, then imagine what you can do. Imagine you have no fear of failure. Imagine you have no fear of success. See only greatness. Fear of success? Yes, we all have it. It's easy to be unknown, it's easy to be a failure, and it's easy to be like everyone else. It takes courage to lead. It takes courage to stand up and take a stand for your beliefs. It takes courage to say "I can do this". It takes courage to say "I deserve this, I've worked for his, and I've earned this". It takes courage to swim upstream when everyone else is riding the current downstream. Look at each problem or goal on your list as a giant that you must slay. Do your homework. Learn the required skills. Pray for wisdom and guidance. Then walk out and face your giant. Don't wait for an opportunity, start moving and opportunities will present themselves. Take aim and expect greatness. Until next time, Fred

Event Horizon: Black Holes of Failure

Event Horizon: Black Holes of Failure

Event Horizon: Black Holes of Failure

There are a lot of web sites like this one, that talk about success. When I first started reading some of them, the one thing I noticed was that they all spent a fair about of time talking about attitude, expectations, and intentions. I wondered why. Why not just give me the formula for successfully creating an internet business and cut all the Twilight Zone crap? I'll tell you why. Because it matters, that's why. I'm sure you've heard that the majority of people who don't have any money and win a lot of money in the lottery or in Vegas, will be broke again in a year or two. Possibly worse. Why? Because they don't change their mental state - they never escape the "Event Horizon of Failure". They live it up for a while, perhaps even do some really good things with their new found fortune, but when it's gone, it's gone, nothing has changed in their ability to foster, maintain, or create that level of monetary worth. What is an Event Horizon? An event horizon is the boundary in space-time around a black hole inside of which events cannot escape. What? Yes, that's what I said. I'll explain a bit more. A black hole is an object in space, like a star, that is so incredibly dense (compact), and therefore has so much mass, that its gravitational force is so strong that even light cannot escape from it. That's why it's called a black hole: you can't see it, no light escapes from it to the outside for us to see. If you happen to be cruising by a black hole in your space ship you would be drawn toward it. As you got closer and closer you would feel its gravitational force get stronger and stronger. You may radio your home base or other ships in your fleet to tell them of your situation. As you approached the event horizon you would still be heard and seen to those close enough to hear your radio transmission and or visually see your space craft. But as your ship crosses the boundary known as the event horizon all that changes. Gravity is so strong that light, radio waves, etc. no longer go out into the universe; they're caught in the shearing force of the black holes gravitational pull and they plunge into the core of the black hole. You would probably be dead long before you crossed over the event horizon, but in case you were not, you would definitely be dead after you crossed over as your very atoms are shredded apart from the intense, violent forces.

"I'm giving her all she's got Captain, if I push it any harder the whole thing will blow" - Montgomery Scott, "Scotty", Chief Engineer, USS Enterprise NCC 1701 (Star Trek TV Show)

How in the Sam Hill is this Useful Information? Failure is like a black hole. And just like a black hole, there's an event horizon that you can cross and you will probably never come back. Like a black hole, failure draws you in. Its pull will try to keep you near and close. The closer you get to the event horizon the stronger the pull. What's more, you don't feel it or know it until some external force points it out. Even then, most of us deny it. Instead of screaming at yourself like Captain Kirk: "Scotty I need more power, give me all she's got...", you're telling Spock that he's wrong about the imminent dangers ahead and to just relax "everything will be OK"... Failure by Rote You accept mediocrity and even failure as normal because you've been trained that you can't succeed. Inadvertently, for the most part, your parents, teachers, pastors, and other important people in your life pass on to you their proximity to the event horizon of failure. They don't mean to, they can't hear Spock saying that they're in danger and need to turn around: it's all been blocked out. Not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur or an industry leader, but a lot are. Have you ever wondered how many great leaders or entrepreneurs never even started down the path that would have produced unbridled success because they were told "you can't do that", or "you have to get a job", or "you must finish college first", or "you have to have a masters degree to do that"? I'm not against education, not at all, but look at some of the founders of companies like Microsoft; Bill Gates was a drop out and he's not necessarily the exception. As opposed to the lottery winners mentioned above, if you were to take away all of Bill Gates' worldly goods and leave him stranded on a street corner with nothing more than his cloths, he would be back on top of a huge pile of wealth in a few short years. People like Bill Gates know they deserve success and they expect success. They realize that money is not evil, nor is it the key to happiness, but that wealth enables you to pursue what makes you happy and allows you to help the lives of others in a positive way. There is hope. The same process of rote learning that keeps you down can also transform you and help you reach success: but you have to stop listening to the propagators of perpetual failure. You have to realize that you deserve success and expect success. But it takes a conscious effort. The event horizon of a black hole is indeed a good analogy. Your old habits, your old situation, your old associates in failure, and possibly your family and friends will keep pulling you back as you start to make progress. You may be embarrassed to change but you must do it. You may hate to stop hanging around with the group or individual that is holding you back, but you have to break those negative bonds. You may "think" you really like those TV shows you always watch, but once you stop watching them you'll realize how silly modern TV shows are, how much time they waste, and how they lower your expectations of yourself. One step at a time, one day at a time, one week at a time: you slowly change your world one positive thought at a time. The whole time, as you work on yourself, you need to visualize your goals and keep telling "Scotty" to give you all the power you need to keep from sliding into the black holes of failure and towards the success you want. Until Next Time, Fred

Two Brothers, One Wife… Perfect Internet Business Model?

Two Brothers, One Wife... Perfect Internet Business Model? (photo by Lee Hinshaw, www.LeeHinshaw.com)I just read a news article about a remote, poor, mountain village (Himachal Pradesh) in India where the brothers in a family traditionally marry one woman. Yes, you read that correctly. It's a hard life and instead of splitting up their inherited plots of land, the brothers in a family marry one wife and live together. They setup arrangements for marital relations, basically take turns, and the parentage of individual children is not known or worried about. To us, it may seem strange, even perverse or disgusting. To them, it's normal and seems to work well. There are a few things that jumped into my mind when I read this article as it related to Internet business. Ok, for those of you still snickering, there were a few more things that jumped into my mind, but we won't go into those! Conserving Resources One of the draws of starting an Internet business is that it does not take a huge investment when compared to starting a traditional "brick and mortar" business. This allows you to conserve and preserve your resources, which is why the mountain people in the article resorted to this arrangement: instead of splitting up their plot of land as it passes from one generation to the next, they preserve their resources. If they didn't do this, they would end up with a plot of land that is too small to live on and live off: livable and farmable land is limited because of the ruggedness of the mountainous area. Multiplying Effort One of the ways successful Internet business entrepreneurs get more accomplished than they can do alone is to sub-contract out the work. They do this by paying either individuals or companies to perform the work, or, some use intern programs where the interns do some work in exchange for learning how to build a business. The remote mountain people in the article practice polyandry, and while it seems strange to us, it builds a team that gets more done and accomplished than they would get accomplished if the brothers had each married a different wife and lived separately. Perception is Reality Here's the biggie. This is why I like this example. How many of us can really imagine sharing our wife with our brothers? Tonight I sleep with her, tomorrow brother number 2 sleeps with her, and the next night brother number 3 sleeps with her. Rinse and repeat. Over and over. Pretty foreign to the normal mode of operation for most of us. But again, to them, it's normal and their life, it's their reality. What's your reality? You may want to be successful, and have bushel baskets full of cash laying around your house, but if you're not and you don't, then success is just as foreign to you as sharing your wife with your brothers (or being married to several brothers if you're a woman). If you truly want to change your reality, or your situation in life, it takes a huge effort. Not necessarily a huge physical effort, but a huge shift in mental perspective. If you're not successful, then there are reasons you're not successful. Internal reasons, not necessarily external reasons. Sure, there may be external influences, but successful people rise above external influences everyday. If you're stuck it's because you're stuck in your reality. You have to move beyond it. To be successful you have to think differently than unsuccessful people and do things differently than unsuccessful people. One of the biggest differences is that you have to take action, you have to do something, and most of the time, you have to try over and over and over and stick with it until you shift your reality from where you are to where you want to be. And remember this example of the remote mountain people. While you may think you understand the reality of being successful, if you're not successful, it's as foreign to you as being married to the same wife as your brother. You have to change your thinking first, then, and only then, will your reality will change. Until next time, Fred

The Two Main Secrets of Success and Failure.

The Two Main Secrets of Success and Failure - Self-Discipline and Clarity of Focus. (photo by Lee Hinshaw, www.LeeHinshaw.com)The two main factors or qualities of success and failure are the same thing. If you have these two traits then you're probably successful at whatever you do, if you don't have them, then you're probably not successful and perhaps even a failure. Let me give you an example: I'm working my tail off on a few projects right now. That's one reason my posting frequency on this blog has been below normal lately. One of the projects deals with my music and recording some new material. I needed to setup my recording equipment in a new location and prep the area for recording by temporarily installing a bunch of acoustic dampening material (acoustic foam). I had a deadline to meet and an even shorter window of opportunity to get the work done because my wife was having her gall bladder removed and I had to finish before her surgery so that I could help her and take care of things around the house. Yet what happened? I found myself spending an exorbitant amount of time building wooden frames to hold the acoustic foam panels. Previously, in the other location I used to do this, I had the foam panels mounted directly to the wall; I couldn't do that in this location and needed to make something to hold them. This setup involves a lot of equipment and cabling, and I spent lots of time getting every little thing as perfect as I could. Finally, I started realizing that my window for getting anything written and recorded was getting smaller and smaller. So I stopped being so anal about the setup and started doing what was actually important at the moment: recording. I met the deadline; however, I could have done more if I'd had better clarity of focus and self-discipline. Kind of goes back to when I was a kid and my dad would send me out to mow the yard... I'd spend two hours fixing the lawn mower when it wasn't even broken. I'd sharpen the blade, adjust the carburetor, gap the spark plug, etc. Yes, those things occasionally need doing, but more often than not the thing will run good enough to mow the grass. Like Larry the Cable Guy says: "Git-R-Done"! Once you get something accomplished you can spend a little time fixing the lawn mower or building more wooden frames to hold things. Then accomplish something else. Rinse and Repeat! My example is actually not that bad because I accomplished what I needed to for the most part. But sometimes it's worse. Have you ever cleared a weekend to work on a special project or two and find yourself sidetracked over and over? Then by the end of the weekend, on Sunday evening, you're so mad at yourself you can't stand it because you didn't even finish one of the things you set out to do. This is where most people fail. Like a jinxed horse in a race, never getting out of the starting gate. This came up, and that came up, and you turned on the TV, and two movies later you're still sitting on the couch eating lunch except now its dinner time. Rinse and Repeat! If you're into sports or music, you've seen people who buy every item they can to help their game, instrument, or performance. If it's sports, they own everything Under Armor makes. If it's a guitar, they have every accessory, every gizmo and enhancement, and every setup adjustment they can find. Then there's the other end of the spectrum: they guys who have the bare minimum of equipment, or just a high quality instrument, and they rely on their skill and execution ability. This second group will generally be the ones to succeed and will get the endorsement deals for all the equipment and accessories - after they've proven themselves, after their self-discipline and clarity of focus have helped them to succeed. There are a lot of things that can help you get and maintain self-discipline and focus. Everything from yellow sticky notes to paid mentors, coaches, and teachers. Being hungry and really wanting what you're striving for helps too. You read a lot in this internet marketing arena about the key to success being taking action or even taking inspired action, but I want to add to that and make it: taking the correct action and taking it now. Clarity of Focus - identifying the things that will make your wheels turn verses just revving up your engine for show. Self-Discipline - doing the things that will make your wheels turn verses just revving up your engine for show. Until next time, Fred
